Free Friday - mail

Oh, what a lovely package did arrive in my mailbox last week!! Remember the green swap from last spring? Well, I totally forgot but Nikki didn't... she had promised me a cutting from her Pilea plant and it arrived in his own little bed (and very cute package). Thank you so much Nikki! And, as this is a swap, something is coming your way ;-)

----------

Working on...

Slowly working through my to-do-list. Today gift wrapped orders (baby onesies with fish print) and a sketch for the baby-announcement window display. I'll be a big papercut display with the baby's name above it (which I can't tell you just yet ;-) ).

-----------

Maternity leave

Two weeks ago I decided to (partly) start my maternity leave. My illustration courses are now in capable hands (partly of the lovely Geertje Aalders).
Although is was a but though to let go, I am happy with this decision as I intantly felt better and more energetic, not having to travel back and forth to Utrecht two nights a week.

But, here's the catch... I'm terrible at taking maternity leave! Once I felt better my head instantly came up with new fun projects, ideas and things to do. A list of examples I'd like to finish before giving birth (dream on Kim...):

-making a new online illustration course (I'm afraid I have to postpone this one till spring).
-sewing all sorts of nice clothes for the baby
-finishing a crochet baby blanket for the stroller
-making a window display/ banner to announce the birth of our little one
-designing a poster (or something like that) with yoga for bunnies (Seb is the enlightened model of course).
-baking, baking, baking (not that I can eat any, baby has barely left room for my stomach)
-having tea with all my friends before the delivery
-making Sinterklaas poems and gifts
-taking on all the commissions that suddenly come in (my new mantra: let it go... let it go... they won't forget you).
-restocking the webshop (check!) and handling all (christmas-)orders
-doing my bookkeeping/ taxes

You catch my drift? In the mean time people do not ask me anymore 'how far along are you?' but 'how much more weeks to go?' and when I reply 1 month everyone starts shooting advise at me like: 'take your rest, you'll never rest again once your baby is born'. 'Enjoy your time off, you'll never ever have time for yourself anymore'. 'Enjoy it while you can, babies are exhausting (although you get sooo much love in return)'
Really!? I was under the impression a baby came with a turn off switch, nicely wrapped in the placenta. Not? Silly me.

And then the other bunch will ask you about your prenatal discomforts and when you do not seem to experience them (although I do acknowledge that it is getting heavier on the belly/ back/ hips), you get the reply: 'oh just wait, you'll get then later/too/once you're in your .... month'. Thanks for pointing that out to me. By the way, so far they are wrong, I still do not suffer (much) from heartburn, cramped legs, not sleeping, nausea, hemorrhoids, extreme hormonal imbalances, thank you very much.

Anyways... I fully understand if you drifted away during this plea. Forgive me. What I do want to say is this: I feel quite fortunate with my state of being and wish others only the best!
In the meantime, I'll be continue posting on my blog but maybe not as frequent as you're used to. I'm slowly reducing till birth. ;-)

-----------

-mijn boekhouding/ belasting doen

Vergeef me.

Christmas (already!?)

The funny thing with commissioned editorial work is that you often design for days way ahead... For Margriet More Magazine I made a DIY nativity set weeks ago and the december edition arrived in my mailbox last weekend!

Free friday - question

We've got a new free friday question! Patricia asks: I finished my shop and now it's time to let the world know about it... Do you have tips for a successful launch?

First I must say that I'm not a total expert on this, my own shop was not really 'launched' it just grew slowly. But hey, I'll give it a go!

1.
You made a start by being featured in this free friday question post! And this is also the first tip: write to bloggers, or even better, send them a little present from your shop (they might talk about it on their blog). You can friendly ask them to tell you/ their readers how they like the product but don't be pushy!

2.
There are some really good experts on this topic like mama marketing (in dutch) for example. You can find all sorts of good tips, tricks and advise on their website. Or join one of their (online) workshops!

3.
Use social media for a special 'launch' offer. Announce your shop on twitter, facebook, your blog, website, etc. Offer a discount, extra pressie with an order or free shipping for the first 10 buyers, one week or one month. Make use of upcoming holidays/ special days too by offering a special gift wrap service or by assembling some great gifts 'under 25 euro' (or dollar).

4.
Send a little gift package to magazines accompanied by an enthusiastic letter about your shop, why your products rock and what makes your shop special (or press release and pictures of your products by email).

5.
Make regular (weekly, no too often, you do not want to spam) posts on divers social media in which you put one of your products in the spotlight. Make it fun and creative. Show how to use the product, how to combine, how it's made, the story behind it, etc.

6.
If you really want to show off ;-)... Throw a shop launch party! Invite all your friends, friends from friends, business contacts etc with an appetizing invitation. Give a workshop (something that combines well or is a spin off of the things you sell in your shop) and maybe even hand out goodie bags or a funny gadget that people will remember your shop by. Display all your products 'live' and offer a discount on this special day only.

Hope this was helpful, good luck with your shop Patricia!

Are you an impulsive shopper? If you like, do you buy immediately?
I'm one of those people who thinks and thinks and thinks again about a purchase, explores other options, untill I'm absolutely sure. A bit exhausting sometimes... But, this morning an Etsy shop called Clay Opera  caught my Eye and before I knew it I bought the absolutely most beautiful cereamic spoonrest (I do not plan on using it, I will put it up my kitchen wall) I've ever seen.
Marta, the owner of the shop makes more amazing ceramic peices, even birdcases! I think I'm in love...

----------

In the drawer...

Sometimes I forget what I made over the years that I've been illustrating and find drawings that have been waiting to be rediscovered in a drawer or sketchbook. Little surprises from (and to) myself :-)

Free friday - good food

What better way to take care of oneself on a free friday than with good and yummy food? As long as I can still stand up straight (although I do have to rest my belly on the kitchen top while cooking, haha!) I really enjoy making healty lunches, snacks and dinner. Today: beans and white cabbage salade with stuffed tomatos and roasted apple bits.

The tomatos are a recipe from cookbook Plenty but the salade and the apple bits came form my own immagination. Here are the recipes:

Apple bits
Cut an apple in slices. Put them on an oven tray and sprinkle with a little but of curry powder.
Slide the tray in the oven and bake them for about 30 minutes at 170C / 330F

Cabbage and beans salad
Boil a big hand full of green beans and the same amount of peas (I used peas and beans from the freezer) in a pan with water for 5 minutes. Drain them and put the beans and peas in a large bowl.
Cut a 1/4 white cabbage in thin strips and add it to the beans and peas. Add a small hand of unsalted mixed nuts.
For the dressing:
mix three tablespoons of olive oil with 2 tablespoons of some sort of nut butter (this could be peanut butter or hazelnut-raisin butter, whatever you like) and 1 tablespoon of honey. Add pepper and salt to your tast and mix the dressing with the veggies.

Easy right? Enjoy!

----------

Makkelijk toch? Eet smakelijk!
